At the Higher Education South Africa conference in Pretoria recently, entitled “Higher Education Engaging with the National Development Plan: Exploring the possibilities and limits in research and innovation”, Habib said tertiary institutions would have to work together, despite policy clashes, to improve research possibilities.
"Universities in South Africa are grossly overpaying for access to
journals because of the failure to present a united front and negotiate
with academic publishers", said University of the Witwatersrand
Vice-chancellor Professor Adam Habib, who also chairs HESA’s Research
and Innovation Strategy Group.

What to expect from academic journal publishers in the future?
The new AudioSlides option is available to authors
of articles in selected Elsevier journals.
AudioSlides are short, webcast-style presentations that are shown next
to the online article on ScienceDirect. This format gives authors the
opportunity to present their research in their own words, helping readers to
quickly understand what a paper is about and appreciate its relevance.

Looking back after 20 years
This is a really interesting (short) article about the development of journals - do try and read it.
"It has been approximately 20 years since distributing scholarly journals digitally became feasible. This
article discusses the broad implications of the transition to digital distributed scholarship from a
historical perspective and focuses on the development of open access (OA) and the various models for
funding OA in the context of the roles scholarly journals play in scientific communities.
..... It took hundreds of years to develop a finely honed paper journal system. In a mere 20 years, digitally
distributed journals are still evolving and have a long way to go in working out the format, conventions,
and economics that will allow the use of this new media to be as effective and as efficient as the paper
media that they are replacing...."
